Been using a Mapp-gas torch to fuse HDPE and MDPE caps to pipe for about a year now, I can confirm it works. PE (polyethylene) plastics are thermoplastics - so you can essentially just melt them together. A lad up here has even been vacuum forming his, using his grill and a hoover.
Their is a definite technique and you need to make yourself some sort of jig to hold it all together, but it works fine and creates neat repeatable results.

oh and just to be a pedant ... hdpe, mdpe and uhmwpe are actually very similar weights (within 2% of each other). The reason that the black pipe is so much lighter is simply because it is so much thinner.
