I produce a fair bit of my own music, though I use a PC and Sonar. My interface is an M-Audio ProjectMix. The direct monitoring option is vital if you are tracking live instruments.
Good monitors are a must. I use Tannoy Reveal 5As which are ace, though lacking in bass (as are all 5 inch speakers)
