it's obvious, but you have to never ever let them out if you're going to keep them indoors.
We were going to let him out anyway once he was big enough, but our kitten was fine until we carried him outside to show him around and let him chase butterflies in the garden - after that he spent the next few months until he was allowed out sprinting for the door everytime it was opened (quite funny as he'd get outside and freeze as he didn't know where to go once he made it :) ).
I think once they see what they're missing they really want to go out (ours at least).
