Back in the day, all BBs were unsealed and required regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly. It's a bit of a faff but not exactly rocket science to service a BB.
However, if you've got a Centaur BB then I'd use it, they are sealed so don't require much, if anything, in the way of maintenance.
