  • any advice on bar end shifters??

Yes, but not with mixing 9/10 speed mechs. I use bar ends in friction mode on various bikes with different freewheels, cassettes, front and rear derailleurs. If you have a 9 speed cassette, use 9 speed mechs and chain, (I expect but don't know that a Shimergo mix would suffice.)

If you bypass the indexed (set) movement of the STI shifters by going friction you can use any compatible parts, as long as they are designed for the same chain width.

I'm old and odd, but I much prefer the silence of 'shifter' operation, and the freedom to chose the other bits as & when. Most people would disagree, as most STIs are easy to use and set up to give quick changes and quiet running. You need to tweek noises away on the fly with friction set shifters, which distracts from the important task of making progress. Hey ho.

Another disadvantage of bar ends is that DJ will call you a codger, and Edscoble will suggest that your set up is suited to retro-touring. Fuck 'em. :-]
