I got some SPDs last week (shimano mountain bike ones) and I really like them. I've got used to them pretty quickly and have nearly got the adjusment right so I feel as comfortable as non-spds when cycling.
They squeek though! Mostly my right foot just as it has gone past the top of it's travel and I am just starting to apply pressure down. My left does a bit sometimes too.
I have tried pedallign with my right foot not clipped in (the other side of my pedal is a normal pedal) and I don't get the noise.
I have tried tightening the cleats but it didn't seem to help.

Is this normal? It's quite annoying!
