  • I can't help but feel that tyre manufacturers, with input from engineers and feedback from riders, must provide tyre patterning for a reason. I doubt that Veloflex handmade tyres have this just for show. Also, the tyres named Roubaix, all seem to have some patterning. Is that not because the Paris-Roubaix race is on cobbles for a large part? Would a slick offer more or less grip than a patterned tread?

Most riders in the Paris-Roubaix prefer to ride on the dirt besides the cobbles, also it's often quite muddy conditions in the P-R.. So if they have a thread patteren that could be the cause.

That diamond-patteren some tires have should'nt matter much grip-wise since it's not very deep.

You should note that professionel riders don't choose to ride tires with patterens in them even when they are riding down a mountain at speeds around 60mph in heavy rain..
