your argument is all very well and good rests on the assumption that it is engineers designing tires from start to finish, and completely missing the fact that the marketing department has a hand in the process....

These high-end race tyres are not marketed to the general public. And more importantly, the same prospective buyers could similarly choose the slick Schwalbe Ultremos, which in racing terms would be of the same calibre.
The examples I choose, all have dimpling, or slight tread patterning. I would think at that level of cycling profiency that the riders (prospective buyers) would have reached, they would know quite a bit about tyre dynamics.
