Even in wet conditions they work better than a treaded design. .

As long as the weather and surfaces are consistent.

A skinny 28c slick at correct pressure has a far too small a surface area for aquaplaning. It just slices through any surface water. .

I never said cycle tyres could/would aquaplane.

.....But, and there always is.... some small patterning can help the tyre deform to the surface it's contacting and in effect regain some grip lost by lack of total contact patch. Also the lower grip level can give a more progressive feel, hence the ride feels more predictable and secure. A grippy slick will hold on longer but let go a lot more suddenly. In my experience in driving or even riding I feel more secure when I can feel slip/loss of grip happening as it gives you a chance to correct it.
