  • ....opt to criticise the designers/engineers from Vittoria and Veloflex. If you think their understanding of tyre dynamics is inferior to that of Sheldon Brown....

.....I can't explain Sheldon Brown's thinking, but I think it is clear, that he was not on the same level of knowledge as tyre engineers from Vittoria.

you a calling kerley a member of "the herd" when you are the one who is basing your argument on anecdotal evidence and opinion (the majority opinion) and he is basing his on facts (the minority opinion)? oh, please...

My discourse was on the viability that Sheldon Brown would know more about tyre dynamics that tyre designers/engineers. Several people have quoted Sheldon Brown, to illustrate the basis for their argument. I have simply said that this is a red herring, as Sheldon Brown was not a tyre engineer. He gave an opinion that dimpled tyres are less effective in grip than slicks. On smooth and dry roads, I agree with him. But on mixed surfaces, and in mixed conditions, I disagree with him, and it appears, so do several esteemed tyre manufacturers....and obviously their designers.

Think what you will. But it seems pretty clear to tyre engineers, that dimpling or slight tread patterning, or siping, is advantageous for tyres of mixed usage design. The evidence is there for all to see. Just because Sheldon Brown says its not that way, well good for him. Proper tyre engineers disagree, and in this case we're talking of Pro tyres, not tyres of choice for Joe Bloggs.
