I'm kind of in favour of taking the top 3 places from the UK champs and then allowing 9 other wild card players to be selected randomly* from the hat, they then form teams amongst themselves... if you don't feel you can go/represent, then you can pass your position on to the next drawn person.
Positives:
Lady luck baby, she rules the waves
No more moaning
Everyone has a chance
I imagine one great new team would form as well as a couple "ok" teams (which is my prediction from the 4th/5th/6th UK Champs spots anyways)
Negatives:
Potential for some really "shit" teams to form, meh.
Individuals may feel pressure from other players to drop out and let others play
Players from different cities might end up clumped together making practice difficult
*Yes I know, I'm fooking bat-shit insane. I'm also aware of the random draw in Berlin, but only 1 or 2 players will get in that way from the UK.
(Just putting it out there... I'm sold on the podium spots being used from the UK champs, but 4th/5th/6th place is pretty weak. Note: This will probably put the ELKs out of the running!)
