Well I didn't actually say HD space, I meant RAM. But even so, since you bring it up: Garageband running on a Mac (just like Logic and many other apps) allocates free HD space to process information. This is exactly why if you fill up the HD of a Mac you'll notice it'll slow down a shit load.
And as for 24 vs. 16 - yeah, but in my experience you don't need 24bit power if you don't have it. 16bit is still Audio CD standard.
