My first battery died after a year. I managed to get a new free one by being super-nice to the customer support guy in India.
The best way to make your battery last is to plug in the charger and remove the battery when using it. This will extend its life by a lot. Even if it's fully charged, it's still being used when it's in your computer. New ones are around £100 so it's worth doing.
