How you get on with distance-learning really depends on your learning style. I have been doing OU modules paid for by work as CPD (continuing professional development). Personally I don't like it - I do okay, but I don't like it. For me, one of the most enjoyable and important aspects of learning is being with people and you really don't get that with the OU. Sure, you might meet your tutor and group once every six weeks but that's not enough to form the relationships with tutors and peers which make learning interesting.
I work for the WEA, which runs loads of interesting, mostly non-vocational courses nationwide, from one-day workshops to longer courses. London Region is particularly vibrant. See if they have something you might like: http://www.london.wea.org.uk/
