  • Picked up one of these turbo trainers the other night and set it up,
and tried a few bikes out on it, geared and fixed,

the instruction manual is about as useful as a chocolate teapot, and the diagrams in it look like they have been photocopied from cave paintings, but as far as i can tell we got it set up ok.

It says, you should replace your Quick Release skewer, with the one they provide, to lock your bike onto the trainer between the clamps (the one they provide has metal parts at both ends, rather than the plastic covered non-lever ends on my road bike QR's) - but of course, i tryed the bike out with My QR skewers and everything felt fine, and i also ran my fixed bike, with regular 15mm track nuts,

... and again everything felt fine,

so my concern; was more to do with the road bikes with QR - is it safe to run my QR - or should i definately do what they say and use their QR?

and also, i was worried about the compression the axle is under as you clamp the bike into place - i mean, to get it Tight, you have to put a fair bit of force into the clampin mechanism, which is presumably putting a lot of compression force through your hub - How tight is tight enough? Is a Little movement ok? or should it be as tight as comfortably possible?

    thanks for any input.

Either way: i rode my track bike against a fair bit of resistance, at a good rpm, for 5 mintues, outside on my balcony in the -2 degree temps - and was pouring buckets of sweat after 10 minutes of effort!
