The emails may be annoying but you can't deny the money they raise is a good thing.
I've only done one charity run; the Action 100 from Bath to London. At the time I had never ridden anywhere near 100 miles, I trained bloody hard for that to get my fitness up. I was pretty new to cycling and spent a summer with a sore arse and aching legs, and truth be told, some of the training was much harder than the event itsself. Obviously on the plus side I got much more into cycling, lost some weight, got fitter, saw some lovely summer evenings, explored some Dorset countryside, and enjoyed myself a lot during it all, but it still took a lot of work and effort.
You have to remember, for some people it will be "to hell and back".
That said... Cycling to Paris one weekend does sound like a lovely break... Forum ride?
