definitely better than not doing it, but i would encourage people to do it independently and try to get supporting bodies / groups to shoulder the costs on their side so that all your sponsorship money can be given directly to a charity of your choice, rather than signing up to a specific charity and doing it (though it depends on the individual charity) as I did one and was disappointed when the eventual cost was far greater than the implied cost (surprise, surprise...) and they cleverly word their t&c (surprise surprise) to get out of any responsibility.
Due to major guilt for the 'amazing holiday' I had (parts were v. challenging but not nearly as challenging as one would hope), I ended up shouldering the full 'cost' myself so that all the raised monies could go to the charity. If I had known the costs were going to be what they were ( the literature was very misleading and massively underestimated them), I wouldn't have done it because quite frankly I couldn't afford it, being a student and all.
Just saying...be careful and if you can do it independently, do....a lot of the charities sub-contract to rubbish tour companies and you end up on the equivalent of a bad package holiday that costs a lot more than it should.
