I had an mtb running like that for fakengering (before you lot even existed) but kept a bent front mech on to stop the chain dropping (no cable or shifter). 7speed twistgrip FTL.
My mate also had same set up, but without front mech and he regulalry dropped his chain, he also only had a front brake for a time! original hipster.
