Spotbrand do a bike called the longboard 9. Which is meant to be run 1x9. I very nearly bought frame off EBay. But went singlespeed instead with the standard Longboard.

Its quite a common set-up. Losing the big ring gives you more log clearance, and alot of folk plain dont use their granny ring.

With a trials hub you could build a strong undished rear wheel and go say 1x6.
But HTFU and go singlespeed.
