This millennia of human activity (millennia of tradition ?) is predominately a Christian thing in origin, that is - it is not, nor ever has been universal. By way of example the Muslims have Friday for their Jumu'ah.
It is not that history was wrong, it is just that people no longer want to spend a day doing nothing. This was a much much easier proposition when there was actually nothing to do, you were literally giving up nothing.
A day of rest where everyone rested would involve no football - no TV, no newspapers, no radio, no local or international news (that emergency charity appeal for the earthquake can wait another 24 hours, fuck 'em) , no fresh milk for your tea, no trip to the seaside, no restaurants and so on.
Should everyone take the day off (?) - care workers, hospital staff, ambulance drivers, the police, gas repair workers, alarm repair workers, firemen, locksmiths, pharmacies, emergency dentists, security guards, those stocking the supermarkets and shops for the following Monday, Thames water, palliative care, trains, tubes, buses and taxi drivers (and various support staff and station workers and managers) to transport people to relatives and friends in care or in hospitals or in prison even, visits they would not be able to do in the working week, maybe prison staff should have the day off, or staff at detention centres housing asylum seekers, even the caterers . . . and so on and so ad infinitum.
You could argue that bank staff chasing up the fraudulent use of your credit cards on a Sunday (should the fraudster really be given a clear day to clear your accounts - on the Sunday) would not have to do so if all the places the fraudster could use the cards where collectively closed on Sunday - but then why chose Sunday, why not Friday to suit Muslim sensibilities - or do you want traditional Chinese Sunday markets to fall in line and shut to meet traditional Christian values ?
Shame on us ? Not at all, we are now free to take a day of rest when we want - we just shouldn't expect everyone else to fall in line with our day of choice.

Ironic isn't it?
