I think a pic will help. I can't visualise the situation here... From what you've written (and I appreciate this is open to interpretation) you've pulled up alongside a truck (that is pulling a caravan) and only later actually noticed the caravan? Where were you looking when you were pulling up so that you somehow didn't see the caravan?
"instinct and memory" are worth fuck all out there on the road. Look behind & look around, often.
