its sometimes hard to see whole vehicles, yes.
think RHB meant to emphasise the need for awareness, several checks behind before decision making.
3 lane roads tend to be speedy ones, hence the imperative to keep your speed up.if theres any doubt that rider wont be comfortably maintaining faster speed at the point they need to be taking the lane, and keeping that speed until able to drop aside to allow vehicles to pass- then a better method is just take a position behind suitable vehicle, again taking the lane at pinch point for safety.
