Oh dear Ed, I had a discussion with Mr John Prolly himself regarding this, don't open your mouth on this discussion without the facts to back up this statement.
JOL was THE FIRST person to bring hardwareless horizontal straps to market/testing for the purposes of bicycle foot retention, along with the Hold Fast guys.
I actually have an apologetic email from John Prolly after he said the same thing, after he accused Jol of copying Hold Fast on his website. I disputed by responding with an email full of factual evidence, times dates etc, stating why he was wrong and why I was right (I wasn't rude merely stating facts), interestingly Hold Fast straps first went into development around the same time as JOLS straps.
