  • Thinking about a new project, with the intentions to make a lazy and simple bike using a rear coaster brake.

I see that hubs such as shimano 3 speed coasters are relatively cheap:
    eg: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SHIMANO-COASTER-BRAKE-HUB-36-HOLE-NOS_W0QQitemZ350279511298QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR?hash=item518e492d02

The question is, the 'arm' on it, which i presume is to be linked up to something in order to change the gears....

is it possible to remove this (in a non-violent manner), and run the rear hub on only ONE of its gears, (ie/ stick it in the middle, direct drive gear, and leave it there) - for reasons of simplicity and clean lines (avoiding having a gear shifter)...

    main concerns are:

-would the hub stay in the gear it was left in long term?
-how would you go about shifting the gear, if the arm was removed, and the hub did happen to shift its self?
-do you still need a lockring? or is the force of resisting the pedals no-where near the force required to unscrew a sprocket?

ALSO, anyone know the spacing for the rear hub?

many thanks for any contributions of knowledge.
