never had unwanted unclipping with spd.
i think the float is 5 degrees, which I believe is the same as Time Atac. (can't be bothered googling)
In any event the float shouldn't make you unclip when skidding - unless you squirm you feet out sideways, but what do i know maybe you do - if so then you are a weirdo and should stick to straps.
You can crank up the tension if you like that heavy clip in sound.
I think you'd tear the sole of your shoe off before busting the pedal, provided your cleats are not worn out, but that applies to any pedal system.
