The trick with the coat/exposed nipple conundrum is to wear something underneath, I find.
I agree that functional cycling clothing's a good thing. I'm not madly keen on lycra either. It just gets a bit wearing when you go into and see a normal bit of kit with some crappy spangly thing attached for forty quid more and you intuit that this is supposed to make you spend money in their shop cycle more.
