Rohloff are in the late part of their R&D on a version of their Speedhub that will be 20% lighter than the existing one. It's already extremely efficient and in terms of weight...
Rohloff Speedhub + shifter = 1.4KG
Campagnolo Record 11 Speed Groupset:
Front Derailleur = 181 grams
Rear Derailleur = 75 grams
Shifters = 340 grams
Cassette = 233 grams
Chris King Rear hub = 268 grams
= 1.1KG
So Rohloff are only 300grams off of a Record groupset. Not bad, especially when you start factoring in the life of the parts and the reduced cost and maintenance. Sure it's not going to make a pro-rider switch, but it's extremely compelling for almost everyone else.
