I tested mine outside my block of flats - apart from some confused looks it was fine.
Don't test it in enclosed spaces, I've had it accidently arm in my bag before when a piece of metal touched the sensor - it went off just as I opened the bag to get to it, so I got a face full of pain.
My ears were ringing for ages.
