I've managed to break a chain, it slipped off and got bend when it got trapped between the wheel and the axle. This was after 14 months without oiling or any kind of a care taken to it.
Even if you are a mechanical numpty (like me) your chain shouldn't break. Unless you buy a sub £200 bike in which case you get what you pay for.
(I have also has a chain snap at polo, that may have been after several bad crashes or after I changed a link I can't remeber)
