Just give it ago. Just go to a DIY store and buy your self a hammer an adjustable spanner may be usful for this job too. Start gental and increase the force used. You will need one at some point in your life. A house without a hammer can never be called a home. Don't say you don't have the money as you were clearly trying to take it to the LBS and they would not fix it for free.
