Didn't want to start a new thread as this one was on the front page, but I have never been to one of these Critical Mass thingys and I'm not sure what to make of them...
I agree it's great to all get together and celebrate the bicycle, meet new people etc, but after speaking to a few people and my own personal experiences, I would love to start a debate (I'm not having a go here btw, just promoting a healthy discussion) on whether Critical Mass is something that promotes the use of the bicycle in City Centres, or does the opposite and turns people away (and if this is important or not?).
Now, my first experience of a Critical Mass after moving into the City Centre was a terrible one, the throng was riding down cross street between Marks & Sparks and the Arndale, and the pedestrian crossing was on red, I crossed (obviously) and was very very nearly knocked down by numerous cyclists who were completely ignoring the traffic signals, riding 4/5 abreast across the road and generally causing a nuisance to pedestrians.
My second experience was viewing the group riding up past my flat, again riding 4/5 abreast across the whole carraigeway causing a nuisance to drivers.
Now the question is, are people worried that some of the more irresponsible riders are creating a bad impression for the conscientious riders, or is it a case of not caring about the opinion of non cyclists and trying to enjoy yourselves?
Again, not trying to have a go at anyone (I'm not in a position to comment as I have never taken part and I'm sure everyone on here is very responsible) but I'd like to get the opinions of a few people on here.
