i don't see the need for differentiating between male and female bits as regards wearing cotton underwear under cycling shorts as we both have bits that need protecting, as a saddle sore is going to make you wince whatever your sex.
i'm surprised anyone would wear pants/knickers/briefs under lycra cycling shorts. the chamois is designed to be next to the skin and it moves separately in the short to avoid friction.
the reason cotton isn't used in sportswear is because it retains moisture and isn't breathable.
i guess if you are only riding a couple of miles it doesn't matter too much but a 2-3 hr ride it's proper bibs FTW.
