For me it is a bit of fun. I like racing but don't have that killer instinct/focus needed to be any good at it. My goal is always to be active in a race, and I hope I am in the B cat races, but if I stopped enjoying it I'd walk away tomorrow with no regrets.
When I first started racing nearly 20 years ago, I joined a club and was doing time trials with them. I rode the 25 mile club championship event, and the normal timekeeper was on holiday so someone else stepped in. He didn't know the course and it wasn't described well to him so his finishing position was about a mile short of the proper finish. I thought I'd done an amazing time so was pretty happy. Whilst stood around at the finish one of the seasoned competitors (and a right grumpy bastard to boot) arrived and, on finding out the course was short, threw a spectacular wobbly, ranting and raving about wasting his evening. I decided there and then that I'd never, ever get that wound up about any race.
