it is doable, cheapest way probably 7 speed shifters which you should pick up reasonably cheap used, you'd need a new rear mech, shimano so as to get indexed shifting, again, 105 or something used is pretty cheap. Then you'd need a new block (shimano to get the smooth indexing) and a chain. You could do it for £50 if you hunted about I would reckon. I did this with used parts(but new cassette and chain) but had bar end shifters and it works sweet.
