Got bored of reading after the first couple of posts, but I ran a campag loose ball BB for about 8 months without a sleeve, with quite a large BB cutout.
Re-greased it a few months back and been running without a sleeve again for a few months.
'Back in the day' people generally just chucked them in the bin and never fitted them.
