I've always thought wop stood for without papers... Originally coined at the turn of the century for immigrants arriving at Ellis Island without documentation... Or is that just another backronym?

Another backronym.

Wop is a bastardisation from guappo (as in elguappo), stems from the Neapolitain dialect and is pronounced guap, meaning cocky and swaggering.
