Well yeah, it's true the press do regularly distort the truth. However, I'm assuming he did actually say these things. I mean really...

I'd carry a pump? Maybe a spare tube? Fix bike chains?! WTF? I think the pit stops are called bike shops and there are quite a lot of them?
He also rides 30 miles per week. Per week. Yet loves how the city "shrinks and becomes conquerable". Shrinks because he does not actually ride anywhere?
I'm sorry but the guy is a complete tool. Once more, "fix bike chains"?! How does that work then? Either the chainline/tension is good, or you're locked into a horrible unanticipated skid. Fear not though, a pit stop is approaching! Just skid until you get there!
