I tend to ask for dibs by PM only, because otherwise it's a nightmare trying to figure out when someone posted a reply compared to when someone else sent a PM (replies in threads are vaguely timed according to how many minutes/hours ago they were made, not given an exact time stamp like in PMs).
Plus if I've asked for dibs by PM and someone just post a dibs in the thread (and doesn't send a PM) it makes me think they've not read the thread properly and are more likely to be a timewaster.
It's just my view, but I tend to think threads are for discussions, PMs are for direct communication (and therefore more suited to selling stuff).
