Have to say I agree with the OP, missed out on a fair few things as I can't always PM when I'm at work.
I naively assumed a dibs would suffice until I pm'd when my boss wasn't looking, only to be informed that I was too late on more than one occasion.
The best thing to do is get a list together and put up a wanted ad, then people can come to you with what they've got.
