For some reason many of the 29er crowd don't even like 36 spokes let alown 48. I know for most applications 48 is a overkill but I have always been amazed at the lack of 48 rims in both 26" for the hardcore downhillers and jumpers and 48 in 700c for the big heavy tourers. More spokes seems like such a cheap way weight wise to add a lot of strength.
