I am just becoming increasingly charmed by the asthetic simplicity of no cables and wires. I also wouldnt mind getting rid of the drop downs and just getting some dinky little ones that I have seen about.
The other option, if you use the drops alot, is a TT style brake lever. I use this set-up and really like it. I ride my fixed mostly on out-of-town country roads though, and use my front brake for desents. The dinky ones you mentioned (BMX levers), mounted on the flats,might be more suited to city cycling (IMHO).
