I've owned a hard case for the past 12 years, they are a worthwhile investment if you intend to travel a lot with your bike. Bike bags are okay but they don't offer much protection from overzealous baggage handlers.
If I was buying one now I'd look at Bike Box Alan or the Polaris Bike Pod.
