I don't know...I've always ridden fixed, or rather, since I gave up my touring bike i've ridden fixed. I fell in love with it when a lady friend of mine lent me her Bianchi Pista in Seattle for an afternoon...so singlespeed wasn't even a thought.
I"m guessing that the blokes want there lady to get into bikes, but think that riding fixed would be too daunting to start with.
I say that couples with cargo bikes are the way forward, but I've always been a trend setter.
