I would imagine that the guy buys or rides fixed. Girl, typically not so into cycling but follows along coz it's a laugh or a means to score a wedding or some shit. Guy doesn't want to be seen with gearing (or beaten by faster gf) so picks a nice, trendy singlespeed for her, since fixed is far too dangerous for a feeble woman to handle.
