The police are plain wrong - an assault doesn't need to involve actual harm. If you were genuinely threatened and felt in danger of imminent harm, that can also be an assault. If you got the officers' details try informing the Independent Police Complaints Commission, although I appreciate that in practical terms you may not see much result. Always worth trying though.
