The nut is a hex one. I have taken it off with a Park Tool hex crank bolt spanner before. Will post a photo in am minute. Here the crank bolt. /attachments/1250 Will ask for horatio and |³|MA3K (how do you pronounce that anyway?!).

thats not hex. You need a socket set to remove that nut. Some crank extractors have them built in. You should get one. Its a really useful tool.
