Yes you can have your chain upside down, all 'anti-drop' systems on chains (especially 1/8 BMX chains) need to be on the correct way, with the grooved bit nearest the cog.
My KMC Kool Chain SL (or whatever it is called) needs to go on a specific way.
This way up (when the chain is at the top of the drive chain) is correct - sorry for the crap picture.
