    Is the seat tube knackered.

    Seat posts only have to go in an inch or so past the bottom of the top tube, much beyond this point on most modern frames the butting kicks in and the seat tube offers no additional support as the post is not touching the inner walls of the seat tube.

    I always pretty ignore the minimum insert mark and use the above rule, the other factor is leverage, if you have 3 foot of post out of the bike and 5 inches in - the leverage will stiff rip your seat cluster apart regardless of post insertion
