+1, theres plenty of other stupid things that we do to our bikes, why not make a joke out of those rather than some made up story of slaves riding to freedom on a fixed gear bike, it just isnt that funny, compared to arrospok or something else.
Joel, that's not the etymology of the phrase hip hop slave bike. It was invented by Tynan (afaik) as a mockery of the way our bikes are branded as cool by the ill informed media (as shown in that alice fisher article).
Sorry if I'm coming down a bit hard, but what you think the meaning comes from isn't funny, and I don't want to see a completely benign (and amusing) phrase get tainted.
