Stem and headset help please

I'm pretty novice when it comes to building a bike and i need some help in getting a stem and headset.

i want a quill stem, am i right in thinking i need a certain type of headset for this? all my local bike shops are no help and just try and force there own stock on me.

If you want to run a quill stem you need a threaded headset and threaded fork - this will be a 1" set up.

If you want to run a threadless stem you need a threadless headset and unthreaded fork - this will be a 1-1/8" set up.
